Portugal dropped Cristiano Ronaldo from their pre-World Cup friendlies against Mexico and the United States due to a muscle injury he sustained while playing for Al-Nassr.

The 41-year-old forward suffered a hamstring injury, which has kept him out of action since February 28, and Portugal’s coach, Roberto Martinez, decided to rest him to ensure he’s fit for the World Cup.

Martinez emphasized that Ronaldo’s World Cup participation isn’t at risk, saying it’s a “minor muscle injury” and they expect him to return within one or two weeks.

The coach also highlighted Ronaldo’s importance to the team, stating he’ll be a central figure in Portugal’s plans alongside Goncalo Ramos as centre-forwards.

The decision allows Martinez to experiment with other players, including Joao Felix, who will be part of the squad for the friendlies. Portugal will face Mexico on March 28 and the United States on March 31 before heading to the World Cup.
