The Super Eagles quintet of Captain Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, Arokudare and Akor Adams grabbed a fair share of the highlights, in the Turkish Super Liga, the English Premier League, and Spain’s La Liga, at the weekend.
Iwobi rounded-off the scoring as Fulham thrashed Sunderland 3-1, and handed the Black Cats back-to-back home defeats at the Stadium of Light; same as Lookman whose excellent start to life in Spain saw him net the 3rd goal in Atletico Madrid’s 4-2 defeat of Espanyol on Saturday; whilst Akor Adams assisted Djibril Sow, who struck the winner as Sevilla edged Getafe 1-0 on Sunday.
Sadly, Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare was in the news for the wrong reasons, after the Wolverhampton wanderers frontman was reportedly sent racist abuses on social media by “multiple perpetrators” following a penalty he missed, during his his side’s 0-1 loss at Crystal Palace, on Sunday.
The BBC reports that, that Arokudare shared screenshots of private messages he received after the game, and the hierarchy at Wolves have issued a statement of support for the out-of-favour Super Eagle, condemning the acts, while vowing to fish out the culprits, for punishment.
And in the Turkish Super Liga, Super Eagles Captain, Wilfred Ndidi made a scoring return to Besiktas, and paid an emotional tribute to his late dad, after netting in the 9th minute, as Besiktas crushed Göztepe 4-0.
Meanwhile, Arsenal restored their 5 points cushion at the top of the Premier League log, with a 4-1 trouncing of harpless Tottenham Hotspur, with Eberechi Eze, and Viktor Gyeokores scoring a brace, each at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, on Sunday.
Manchester City had a day before, edged Newcastle United 2-1 to close up the gap between them and the Gunners, to just 2 points.
Also yesterday, Liverpool left it late, before stunning Nottingham Forest 1-0, to boost their quest for a spot in the top 4. With a game in hand versus Everton tonight, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are tied on 45 points, and are locked in a race to finish in 4th, behind Arsenal, City and Aston Villa.
And in Spain, Barcelona capitalized on the wobbles of Real Madrid, who got beaten 2-1 at Osasuna on Saturday, to return to the top of the La Liga log, with a comprehensive 3-0 thrashing of Levante.
The points earned took their tally to 61, one point better than Real Madrid, who are now 2nd, going into the run-in.
