Enugu State government has reiterated its desire to host a successful 2026 National Sports Festival.

The state Commissioner for Sports, Barrister Lloyd Ekweremadu, dropped the hint in a chat with Sportsday on Saturday.

Despite the insinuations being held by Nigerians who have described Enugu’s readiness to be on a slow pace, Ekweremadu said the state is prepared in relation to the set timeline to put in place all the necessary facilities for the festival.

“We are prepared as far as our timelines are concerned. We are in line with the set out timelines. So, accomodations for example are ready. We are ready to host the number of athletes and teams we are expecting”.

Commissioner Ekweremadu based his assertion on the reports of the National Sports Commission’s Main Organizing Committee (MOC) which scored Enugu perfect to host the country.

“With the reports of the NSC’s Main Organizing Committee (MOC) who were on an inspection visit to Enugu state recently, everything relating to accommodation has gotten the required commendation.

However, the Commissioner stated that some facilities need attention in upgrade.

“What’s outstanding now in some of the facilities at major venues which include the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Agwu Games Village”.

“As a matter of fact, the Enugu State Executive Council has given approval to the proper renovation and upgrade of the stadium, the Games Village and other facilities that are intended to be used”.

“In terms of the indoor facilities that will host combat sports, I want to assure you that we are already as some will take place at the indoor sports hall inside the stadium, some at the PPSMB Parliament buildingl and the International Conference Centre (ICC). So, anything indoor we are ready”.

“When it comes to Cricket, the venue is also ready. So, these were the analysis made by the inspection team, and, essentially these are the areas they think are good to go”. But, on our part we know where we still need to do some work”.

“We have a year from now because it’s meant to be in November next year and we will be good to go”, stated Ekweremadu.
