National U20 women side, Falconets, on Sunday overcame their counterparts from Tanzania 2-1 at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja in the third qualifying round for the 2024 FIFA U20 Women World Cup.

By the result, the Nigerian side eliminated Tanzania 3-2 aggregate after the first leg ended 1-1 in Dar es Salam last week.

Janet Akekoromowei put Nigeria in the driving seat twenty minutes into the match and the Falconets, afterwards, sustained efforts to increase the tally to no avail.

However, the former African champions continued to pile pressure but it was the visitors who grabbed the equaliser through Jamila Rajani Mnunduka  five minutes after the curtain raiser by the Falconets.

The first half ended with the one goal apiece but on resumption, the host raised the tempo of the game, throwing everything into the match in search of the winner that would take them to the next round of the qualifiers.

The efforts paid off in the sixtieth minute as Comfort Folorunsho made it 2-1 for Nigeria. The goal came after a series of interchanges from the host.

Meanwhile, Tanzania tried everything possible to drag their hosts to no avail as Nigeria held on to advance.

With the result, the Falconets are through to the 4th and final round of the African qualifiers. They will square up with Burundi for a place at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, Colombia 2024.
