Rivers United star, Festus Austin, has called time on a glorious playing career, announcing his retirement at the age of 34.

He will continue to play a role at the club, as he has been appointed new team coordinator.

Announcing his retirement, he said, “I am not a man of many words but I can honestly say that playing football is all I have ever wanted to do, and to have had such a long and successful career at Rivers United is a real honour.

“On my new role, I will continue to give my best towards the growth and success of the club.”

Festus, nicknamed ‘Koboko’, began his career with Paulson Academy in Benin City, Edo State, he then joined Bendel Insurance in 2007 before making a move to Dolphins of Portharcourt in 2008. He was part of the team that won the Nigerian League title in 2011.

With the emergence of Rivers United in 2016, the rugged and dogged defender joined the Pride of Rivers.

Festus lifted Rivers United’s first NPFL title in 2022; and although not playing a major part in the team due to injury, as captain, he was a source of motivation both on and off the field.

He also played for the Nigeria U-17 team and participated in the 2005 UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup.

He was part of the Nigeria U-17 at the African U-17 Championship in Gambia.

Festus is now one of Rivers United’s greatest legends, surpassing Ahmed Abdulrahman who played at the club for 14 years.

He is also one of the longest-serving players in Nigeria’s topflight having spent 16 seasons.
