The head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, Rena Wakama, has been recognized by her alma mater, Western Carolina University, for her remarkable contributions to the sport.
The prestigious award was presented to her during a special ceremony at the university’s campus in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
Wakama’s impressive achievements include making history as the first female coach to lead Nigeria to an AfroBasket Women’s title. Under her guidance,
D’Tigress has dominated African basketball, securing back-to-back victories on the continental stage and strengthening the team’s global competitiveness.
Speaking at the event, Wakama expressed her gratitude to Western Carolina University for shaping her athletic and coaching journey. “I’m deeply honored to be recognized by my alma mater. This institution has played a significant role in my development as an athlete and coach. I’m grateful for the support and inspired to continue pushing boundaries,” she said.
The award highlights Wakama’s growing influence as one of Africa’s most successful young coaches and a role model in women’s sports.
D’Tigress are currently preparing for upcoming international engagements, building on their recent success under Wakama’s leadership.
