Peseiro: NFF Mum On New Deal As Amuneke/Finidi Rumour Heightens

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is not forthcoming in its position regarding the renewal of the expired contract of Super Eagles manager, Jose Peseiro.

This is sequel to the fact that the contract of the former Venezuelan coach expired at the end of last month and according to SportsDay source which craved anonymity, there was no discussion in the NFF hierarchy concerning the renewal of the contract of the Portuguese.

The source hinted that the silence may not be unconnected with the fact that the former African champions have already qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire and that any coach could lead the team for the remaining games in the qualifiers.

“The issue of Peseiro’s contract is not what is being discussed presently in the NFF.

“Whether he will still remain as the coach of the Super Eagles or not is what I don’t know but Peseiro is not being discussed because we are already at the Cup of Nations.

“But I know NFF is desirous of making sure that Nigeria performs better in Ivory Coast but whether this coach will lead them is a different thing altogether,” he said.

Meanwhile, the source kept sealed lips on whether either of Emmanuel Amuneke or Finidi George is being considered to replace the Portuguese but admitted that such insinuation could be possible but noted that nothing has been decided yet.

“As far as NFF is concerned, Peseiro is out of contract but whether he will continue or the managers you mentioned will replace him, I don’t know.

“Our own coaches (Amuneke and Finidi) are eminently qualified to lead the Super Eagles but nothing has been spoken of that.

“We still have a long time to go before the AFCON and anything is still open to happen before then,” the source from the north told SportsDay.

It will be recalled that speculations have been rife that the NFF will not renew the contract of Peseiro when it ended with either of the former Super Eagles touted to replace him.

However, stories emerged last week that the football house has concluded plans to offer the coach six months contract.
