Lagos has broken new ground as the first African city to host the E1 electric powerboat race, also known as the E1 Lagos GP. This milestone marks a significant step towards a future powered by clean energy, innovation, and opportunities for young people.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has praised the Lagos State Government for turning the state into a world-class sports hub.
This achievement puts Lagos in the same league as global cities like Monaco, London, Jeddah, and Venice, which have also hosted the prestigious E1 Boat Championship.
Appreciation was expressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his supportive message, highlighting Nigeria’s dedication to sustainability and the blue economy. By joining the ranks of cities like Monaco, London, Saudi Arabia, and Venice on the E1 calendar, Lagos has demonstrated its boldness, resilience, and readiness to take its place on the global stage.
The NSC DG further highlighted that this is the latest in a series of international sporting events hosted by Lagos this year, including the annual Access Bank Lagos International Marathon, the Lagos International Badminton Classic, and the “Chaos in the Ring” boxing event.
Hon. Olopade also emphasized that the Commission is fully aligned with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to build a sustainable sports economy.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has given us the mandate at the Sports Commission to build a sustainable sports economy, and attracting international sporting events to the country is a major part, which Lagos State has been very actively involved in,” he added.
