Nigeria’s wrestling team delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt, claiming the overall title after a dominant showing in the women’s division.
The team amassed an impressive haul of eight gold and two silver medals out of a possible 10 in the women’s category, sealing a record-extending 15th continental championship victory.
While the women stole the spotlight, the men’s team also made notable contributions, finishing third overall to secure a podium place. Andrew Ebierelayefa narrowly missed gold in the 74kg category after losing by pinfall to Egypt’s Omar Mohamed, while Stephen Akintewe settled for silver in the 65kg following defeat to Shehabeldin Emam.
In other performances, Dideikemei Erefagha showcased dominance with a commanding 12-0 win over Chad’s Elie Djekoundakom in the 70kg category. Solomon Ulabo secured bronze in the 79kg after defeating Madagascar’s Totiana Razafinjato by pinfall, while Saviour Egoli also claimed bronze in the 61kg with a hard-fought technical victory over Tunisia’s Mustapha Batinini.
The Nigerian contingent, made up of 10 female and eight male wrestlers, competed across 18 events in the championship, which began on April 27 and concluded in Alexandria.
Nigeria’s triumph further reinforces its position as a powerhouse in African wrestling, particularly in the women’s division, where it continues to set the pace on the continent.
