Delta Queens Fc of Asaba on Sunday evening emerged the winner of the 2022/23 Nigeria women football league Premiership.
The Former champions came from a goal down to beat defending champions Bayelsa Queens 2-1 in a highly entertaining final match inside the Stephen keshi international stadium in Asaba, the Delta state capital.
Watched by huge crowd, Including top football and sports administrators, across the country, Nff secretary General Dr Mohamed sanusi, chairman Delta state sports commission, Tonobok Okowa, NOC vice President Solomon Ogba, and the wife of Delta state Deputy Governor who was the special Guest Mrs Oyeme and the representative of the Governor of Delta state, Hon Johnson Erijo the chief of staff to the governor and a host of others.
Bayelsa Queens shot into the lead following an own goal by Delta Queens defender Chisom Henry after 14th minutes of play, as Bayelsa Queens lead 1-0 at half time.
Coach Tosan Blankson had to introduce two of his strikers Chinasa Agoh and Easter Iyang early in the second half and it paid off as chinasa Agoh equalised for the home team with a beautiful bycicle kick in the 67th minutes as the stadium went into wide jubilation, the enterprising forward added her second goal in the 87th minutes as Delta Queens dethroned the champions 2-1 at the end of proceeding.
Delta Queens went on to claim all individual award of the tournament, first it was Mgbechi Anderlyne who was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament, while Mercy omokwo got the top scorer award and Star player of the match chinasa Agoh was voted the MVP of the NWFL super six tournament.
Earlier, Rivers Angels defeated Hard fighting kogi confluence Queens 2-0 to claim the bronze medal and went home with 3million Naira for their efforts, while Bayelsa Queens were rewarded with 5million Naira as the runner up, and the champions Delta Queens took home the gold, giant trophy and the star prize of 10million naira.
Meanwhile, the executive Governor of Delta state Sheriff Oborevwori upon receiving the team at his residence after the victory dole out another 10million naira to the victorious Delta Queens.
The Asaba girls will now represent Nigeria in the WAFU B tournament later this year From where a winner will emerge to play in the 3rd women CAF champions League tournament.
