Nigerian police have increased their efforts to apprehend two suspected same-sex perpetrators, Adekunle Young Adetunji, 43, and Samuel Ibhafidon Olumese, 54, (both male), who were caught in the act on June 30, 2025, at No. 3, Wera Estate, Eyita, Ikorodu, Lagos State, on the basis of their alleged homosexuality, in the latest example of the country’s harsh stance toward the gay community.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan signed the same-sex marriage prohibition bill in 2014, which prohibits marriage, same-sex cohabitation, and any public display of same-sex amorous relationships.

After conducting an investigation, the police traced one of the suspects, Adekunle Young Adetunji, according to a statement from the Public Relations Officer of Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, to Ibadan and the police have launched a manhunt to apprehend them to face the law.

A police investigation, however, revealed that upon the absconding of the two suspects, one of them, Adekunle ran to Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, as the digital tracking of his mobile phone number indicated that he had arrived in Ibadan and hid with one Adewale Aderemi, who is a family friend, on 1st July 2025.

Aderemi, when arrested and later released on bail by the police, said Adekunle Young Adetunji had left his place on 15th October 2025 when he informed him that he was returning to Lagos. And since then he has not heard any information about his whereabouts.

The authorities then intensified their search efforts in Lagos, hoping to uncover any leads that might reveal Adekunle’s location. Meanwhile, Aderemi was questioned further, as investigators sought to determine whether he had any additional information that could aid in locating the fugitives.
