Barcelona secured a commanding 4–1 victory over Espanyol in the Catalan derby on Saturday, with Lamine Yamal delivering a decisive performance that included one goal and two assists.
The result further strengthens Barcelona’s position in the La Liga title race, leaving them nine points clear of Real Madrid.
Ferran Torres gave Barcelona an early lead after just nine minutes, heading home from a Lamine Yamal corner following a defensive error from the Espanyol goalkeeper. The same pair combined again shortly after, as Yamal delivered a precise through ball for Torres to finish clinically and double the advantage. Barcelona continued to dominate possession and chances, with Yamal coming close to scoring from a curling free-kick and other efforts being kept out by the Espanyol defence and goalkeeper.
Barcelona thought they had added a third when Eric García was involved in the build-up for another Ferran Torres finish, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Espanyol eventually responded in the 56th minute when Pol Lozano capitalised on loose defending inside the box to fire a low shot into the corner and reduce the deficit.
The visitors struggled to build momentum from that point as Barcelona regained control of the match. Yamal eventually got on the scoresheet in the closing stages, tapping in after a mistake from the Espanyol goalkeeper to make it 3–1, before substitute Marcus Rashford completed the scoring with a composed low finish after a well-worked move involving Frenkie de Jong.
The victory also carried historical significance for Yamal, who became the youngest player to reach 100 La Liga appearances at 18 years and 272 days, surpassing records previously held by Raúl and Iker Muniain. Barcelona’s superiority was reflected throughout the match, both in control of play and the quality of chances created, as they comfortably closed out another statement win in the derby.
