Women W’Cup: Oshoala Equals Nwadike, Okosieme Records, Sets New One

Asisat Oshoala, the Nigerian and FC Barcelona Femini prolific forward, has equalled the record of Nigerian top scorers at the FIFA Women World Cup with her strike against host Australia in Super Falcons 3-2 win over the Matildas on Thursday.

Oshoala also becomes the first African woman to score in three FIFA Women World Cups.

It will be recalled that the Super Falcons earned a stunning  3-2 win over co-hosts, Australia, at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Thursday.

Van Egmond gave Australia the lead with a low drive finish on the stroke of halftime.

Uchenna Kanu brought the Super Falcons back into the game with a close-range finish following a good work from Rasheedat Ajibade just before the end of the first half.

Ohale Osinachi gave Nigeria a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute, heading in at close range.

Substitute Asisat Oshoala, who was not fit enough to start added the third goal following a miscommunication in the Matilda’s backline.

Alanna Kennedy reduced the deficit for Australia in the stoppage time to end the tie 3-2 in favour of Nigeria.

The Super Falcons are now on top of Group B with four points from two games.

Randy Waldrum-led side will battle Republic of Ireland on Monday in their last Group B match.

However, beyond winning the match against popular prediction, Oshoala equalled Super Falcons legends like Rita Nwadike and Nkiru Okosieme who both scored three times each at the World Cup in their time with the former African champions.

Before now, both players were Nigerian top scorers at the World Cup and with Oshoala grabbing one of the three goals on Thursday, the Barcelona forward has joined the fray and may even surpass that record as Nigeria has at least one game to play when they host the already eliminated Ireland in the last group match.

Meanwhile, Adaku Okorafor and Mercy Akide both had two World Cup goals to etch their names in the history book.
