President Bola Tinubu has sent a message of encouragement to the Super Eagles, urging them to put their World Cup disappointment behind and refocus on the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The President acknowledged the team’s efforts in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, despite their heartbreaking exit in the playoff match against the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Eagles lost 4-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Morocco, ending their World Cup dreams for the second consecutive tournament.
In a statement, President Tinubu commended the players for their hard work and dedication, saying, “Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them.” He emphasized the need for renewal and urged the Nigeria Football Federation, team officials, and stakeholders to “plug all the loopholes” and regroup for the AFCON challenge.
President Tinubu called for a fresh start, urging the team to learn from their mistakes and bounce back stronger.
The President emphasized the importance of the upcoming AFCON tournament, saying, “Now is the time to focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations. Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory.”
