Nigeria’s Super Eagles are facing significant challenge in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign as star striker Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of the crucial match against South Africa. Osimhen sustained an injury during the Super Eagles’ 1-0 win over Rwanda on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
The injury occurred in the 27th minute of the match when Osimhen clashed with Rwandan defender Claude Niyomugabo, causing him to limp off the field with a bruised shin. Despite initial attempts to continue playing, Osimhen’s discomfort persisted, leading to his substitution by Cyriel Dessers in the 35th minute.
Team doctor’s assessment confirmed that Osimhen has a bruise on his shin, and he woke up the next morning with discomfort, rendering him unfit for Tuesday’s match against South Africa. This news poses a significant blow to the Nigerian team, as Osimhen has been a key player for the Super Eagles. His absence will undoubtedly be felt in the match against South Africa, scheduled to kick off at 16:00 GMT on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at the Free State Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Osimhen’s injury adds pressure on coach Eric Chelle to find alternative options for the team’s attacking lineup. Possible replacements could include:
