noStakeholders Call On Senator Kingibe & FCT Sports Authorities to Complete Work At Nyanya Mopol Football Field

    By: Chinedum Ohanusi

A call has gone out to the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mrs. Iretti Heebah Kingibe; and the Sporting authorities in the nation’s capital, to ensure that the laying of an Astro Turf, and other related works,
on-going at the Mopol football pitch in Nyanya, is completed without further delay, so that I t can be put into good use.

The facility, which is the only playing pitch in a densely populated Nyanya, in the outskirts of Abuja, and within a few meters away from the boundary with Mararaba, in Nasarawa State, was closed-down last year for the laying of a hybrid artificial turf, on the bare pitch, which the teaming youths in the area were compelled to play on.

However, work on the project which was said to have been attracted as a Constituency Project of the immediate past FCT Senator, Dr. Philip Aduda, stalled after the laying of astro turf on a portion of the ground, which was preceded by the construction of an underground drainage system.

When reached for comments, Senator Aduda told Sports Day that it was up to the incumbent senator (Mrs. Kingibe) to also prioritize the project, given the multitude of youths that will benefit from playing on the state-of-the-art surface, when fully ready and inaugurated.

“Government and government business is a continua. As you know, I am no longer the FCT Senator. So it is down to if the current Senator also sees this as a priority; and if the Sporting authorities in the FCT are able to pressure her to ensure the good work I started is completed”, Dr. Aduda asserted.

The Senator who was in the hallowed chambers for four straight term, also urged the youths and their coaches, who no longer have a place to play what he called ‘their every Sunday football’ to explore ways of demanding for the completion of the laudable project.

“I can tell you I have a good rapport with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, who happens to be an ardent sports lover. He has already done a lot in opening up roads, and beefing up security and other facilities, since he sat on the saddle. But I can tell you that if they renege in giving these youths joy, the Minister may step in”; he enthused.

He said inviting the FCT Minister well-known for having strong passion for Sports, to Nyanya, for a firsthand inspection of the project, should not be ruled out, as he will stand-up to any intervention that will bring about the timely conclusion of the project, and put smiles back to the faces of the thousands of youths, in that locality.

When reached for comments, the Project Manager of the incumbent FCT Senator; Engineer Osereme Christe Omofoma admitted that although Senator Kingibe did not prioritize the completion of the ground in her first twelve months of her tenure, but having executed many projects and programmes tailored to benefit women, youths and children in her consistency, the playground and sundry sports facilities would receive the attention they deserve, in the next one year.
