The Rotary Club of Victoria Garden City, Lekki, on Wednesday 26, gave out maternal care kits to 30 excited pregnant women at the Ikota Primary Health Care Centre, Lekki, Ajah, using the opportunity to also plant different species of trees, including edible fruit bearing ones to enhance the beauty of the centre and contribute to the global environmental preservation project.
Rotarian Celestine Amukumara, Hope President of the Club, who spoke with DAILY INDEPENDENT at the event said “the Rotary Club International, dedicates the month of July for maternal and child care programmes, involving the care of pregnant women, the sick and little children.
“We have many pregnant women who cannot afford maternal care kits during pregnancy, and sometimes husbands to these pregnant women also face financial crises hindering them from buying the needful, creating panic in the days leading to delivery and if care is not taken could lead to serious complications, prompting the club to offer the needed supports.” He added.
Explaining further, Rotarian Amukumara said the Ikota Health Centre was choosen because it is under the catchment area of the Rotary Club Of VGC, stressing that the last time the Club gave humanitarian health items to the facility was three years ago with previous visitations to the Badore and Olomu Health Centres for similar donations before revisiting the Ikota Health facility on Wednesday for another round of donations.
Adding, “Before coming with maternal care kits to the health centre, we did a need assessment study to ascertain the most important requirements of the patients attending the facility and we discovered that the needs of pregnant women is most cogent, motivating us to make provisions for 30 beneficiaries who are extremely excited to receive their maternal care kits from us.”
The club also took the auspicious occasion to plant different tree species, including edible fruits to beautify the hospital environment, while contributing to the global Environmental conservation goal aimed at protecting the earth from the harmful effects of greenhouse emissions.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to our correspondent, expressed their excitement, stating they never envisaged such gifts coming their way.
Gift Daniel who resides in Ajah but attends the Ikota Primary Health Centre for her ‘ante-natal’ care, appreciated members of the VGC Rotary Club for their kind and humanitarian gesture, praying God replenish them with great favours.
Sonia Odama who recently came from Benue State to join her husband who works as a security official in Lekki, said she was yet to get job that could help her provide all the delivery materials for her unborn child, but the donation from the Rotary Club Of VGC has saved her unborn child from what could have being a lifetime trauma.
Ofonome Isreal was simply full of prayers for the organisers, with an emotionally laden voice, prayed that every member of the club will never be put to shame in any areas of their lives.
