Organizers of Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football spectacle, the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament tagged Prosperity Cup have congratulated the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Dr Bashir Adewale Adeniyi on his emergence as President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, NWF.
The Customs boss pooled 14 votes out of the 14 executive members to succeed Dr Daniel Igali as President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation in the elective congress held at the Gymnasium Hall, Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday, October 25, 2025.
Director General of the tournament Mr. Ono Akpe in a congratulatory message on behalf of the Central Organizing Committee, COC, noted that Dr. Adeniyi’s victory as the new NWF President would enthrone renewed hope for the nation’s athletes particularly wrestlers who have always made the country proud.
According to him, with the CG as president of the NWF, the reputation of the Wrestling Federation would soar very high in the world, expressing confidence that the seasoned administrator would bring his wealth of administrative expertise to bear on the Federation and beyond.
The statement notes that the Customs boss’ consistent support of the Prosperity Cup, Nigeria’s largest grassroots football tournament, is a testament of his passion for sports development and youth empowerment.
Mr Akpe said Adeniyi’s leadership style has not only elevated the Customs to a prominent position in the nation but has also made a significant impact in sports development in Bayelsa, the Niger Delta region, and the country as a whole.
He equally congratulated Mr. Chris Amkpila on his victory as Vice President and Dr Daniel Igali, who doubles as the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development for his triumph as the South South Zonal Representative on the Board of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation. Undoubtedly, with Hon Igali’s continued technical support to the Federation, a lot would be achieved by the new board.
His words, “CG Bashir Adewale Adeniyi has been an ardent supporter and a supporter of the Prosperity Cup, we are truly happy for this latest milestone he has attained, his passion for the development of sports is getting the needed results,” he stated.
In the last two years, “Adeniyi has increased revenue collections, consistently surpassing budgetary targets, improved relations with various stakeholders, modernised operations and digitalised processes for effectiveness, it speaks volumes of a renewed hope in the sports sector” Akpe added.
”For us in the Prosperity Cup we are elated that you will continue from where Hon Daniel Igali left the wrestling federation and in addition, give wrestling more validation as one of the leading sports in the nation.”
