As the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season gets to the finish line with just one match remaining to play, the league’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Davidson Owumi, has given his assessment of the outgoing term.
Speaking during a media session on Thursday in Enugu, Owumi despatched the idea of English Premier League Trophy tour in Nigeria.
He described the process as one that does not add any economic value to the football ecosystem in the country.
“Last week, I was told that some people came to do EPL Trophy tour. How does that affect we the fans? We should get our priority right. That the trophy was in Enugu is not known in London, and it’s of no economic value to Nigeria”.
Meanwhile, Owumi has criticized multinational companies in Nigeria for failing to prioritize the efforts being put in place by administrators to develop the Nigerian league.
“While Remo Stars won the NPFL title, which company came to present the trophy in Abakaliki?
“Again, talking about colonial mentality, we should treat or cure ourselves of always looking outside”.
It took the people, the fans, the managers and the country to build the EPL to what it is today. So, why are we not building our own today?Nobody will do it for you”, Owumi sounded.
The Premier League Trophy tour took place in Enugu last Friday, with a visit to Enugu Governor, Bar. Peter Mbah, at the Government House.
