_Lagos State Secondary Schools Handball Championship Kicks Off with 82 Schools Competing_
The 2025 edition of the Lagos State Secondary Schools Handball Championship, also known as the ‘Opeifa Cup 2025’, is currently underway, featuring over 82 schools in Lagos State. The championship, now in its 7th edition and 10th anniversary, has been sponsored by Comrade Kayode Opeifa, former Commissioner for Education, Lagos State.
According to Mrs. Opeifa, event coordinator and former chairperson of the Lagos State Handball Association, the championship has achieved its primary objective of discovering handball talents in Lagos State and Nigeria at large.
The event has produced stars who have gone on to make a name for themselves in America, Europe, and other parts of the world.
Mrs. Opeifa revealed that Comrade Kayode Opeifa’s major objective for sponsoring the secondary schools handball championship was to create a pathway for Nigeria’s participation at the Olympic Games.
Mrs. Opeifa emphasized that the objective championship remains intact, and hope is not lost as they enter the second phase in 2026.
The quarter and semi-final matches in both the junior and senior categories are scheduled to take place on Thursday, 30 October 2025, at the Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba, Lagos, ahead of Friday’s finals.
