Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana completed a loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor on Thursday, the Premier League club said.
Onana’s move had been on the cards since the club acquired Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on last week’s transfer deadline day.
The Reuters Tariff Watch newsletter is your daily guide to the latest global trade and tariff news.
Lammens’ 18.2 million pounds ($24.58 million) signing left United with four goalkeepers, and while the club said they were fine carrying that many, the struggling Onana’s future had already been in doubt.Turkey international Altay Bayindir started all three of United’s Premier League games this season, while the 29-year-old Onana has only played once, in United’s shocking second-round League Cup loss to fourth-tier Grimsby Town in a penalty shootout. Onana was at fault for Grimsby’s two goals.

Onana was signed from Inter Milan for 47.2m pounds in 2023, and his inconsistency has made him a target for scathing criticism ever since.

He was United’s number one last season, but a hamstring injury kept him out of the club’s pre-season games.

Turkey’s transfer window does not close until Friday, and there is anticipation Onana, who is on international duty with Cameroon, could make his debut against Fenerbahce on Sunday.
Tom Heaton is United’s fourth goalkeeper.

    Why the loan is welcomed

Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has suffered significant criticism for his performances, which have negatively affected the team’s results.

    – High-Profile Mistakes: Onana has made several high-profile errors, including a notable flaw against Bayern Munich, where he failed to save a weak shot by Leroy Sane, contributing to United’s 4-3 defeat.
    – Inconsistency: his unstableness in goal has raised concerns about his reliability, with former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes criticizing him for poor concentration and making the team nervous.
    – Direct Goals Conceded: Onana’s mistakes have led to direct goals against United, including a crucial error in the Europa League final against Tottenham, where he was unable to deal with a tame effort from Brennan Johnson, costing his team the game.
    – Poor Decision-Making: Onana has been questioned for his decision-making, such as coming out to punch a ball in his box rather than claiming it above the heads of the Grimsby attackers, leading to a goal.
    – Poor Communication : lack of understanding with teammates, like Patrick Dorgu, has also led to goals, such as against Ipswich.
    – Struggles Against Set Pieces Onana has struggled with set pieces, including free kicks, where he has been caught out multiple times, such as against Aston Villa and Galatasaray.

These errors have brought about his exit from Manchester United through loan to Turkish side Trabzonspor. (Sportsday).
