Prince Vincent Okumagba, the chairman of the Unified Nigeria Supporters Club, has described the botched World Cup qualifying match against Congo DR as a moment of deep sadness for Nigerian football and is hopeful that the younger players in the national team will learn from the agonizing 2026 World Cup miss ahead of future competitions.

On his return to Lagos, he made a statement in which he expressed his gratitude to the NSC’s leadership, led by Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade for their amazing gesture to the Unified Nigeria Supporters Club members who were in Morocco to support the Super Eagles.

In his comments to reporters, Okumagba emphasized that the Nigeria Supporters Club received full support for their trip, marking the first time in nearly 20 years that they will be enjoying such huge support. The leadership of the Nigeria Sports Commission arranged for their flight tickets, hotel accommodations, feeding, match tickets, and transportation from the hotel to the match venues.

“Although our boys lost 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo in the final of the African play-off for the World Cup in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday, there are many lessons that were meant to be learned from the episode. I think the boys tried their best but their best seemed not enough. And it happens. I think they will learn so much from this moment, and I’m sure when the next moment comes, they will be better prepared, and hopefully that will be a chance to make a difference.”

“As a Supporters Club, we have also learned valuable lessons. We acknowledge the passion and dedication of a nation that has unwaveringly supported its team through both triumphs and challenges. However, we recognize that the outcome our country deserved was not achieved through our collective efforts.”

“On behalf of the interim management committee and all members, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the NSC under Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade for their yeoman’s job. They are responsible for our round-trip airline tickets, hotel accommodations with food, timely delivery of our match tickets, and transportation from the hotel to the match venues.”

“In fact, all our members that have visas for the trip were all airlifted via the NSC arrangement, they showed absolute cooperation with us and I am most grateful. There isn’t any finer welfare package than what they provided,” Okumagba noted.

He emphasized that such support not only enhances the spirit of the players but also strengthens the bond between the group and its members. Moving forward, he expressed hope that similar initiatives would continue to promote unity and excellence in future endeavors.
