The Okpekpe international 10km road race is run over hills and tarred roads, starting from Apana Road and ending in Okpekpe town. The first edition was held in 2013 and it became a label road race in 2015.

    Course Record:
Men: Daniel Simiu Ebenyo (28 minutes and 28 seconds set in 2023)

Women: Caroline Chepkoech KIPKIRUI 9Kazakhstan) (32 minutes and 38 seconds set in 2023)

It is the first road race in Nigeria to have its race course measured by a World Athletics certified Course measurer

It is the first road race in West Africa to be granted a label status (bronze in 2015) eight years after World Athletics started classification of road races.

A label status denotes ‘a full application of the Competition and Technical Rules in, at a minimum, the elite component of the competition.

Labels also denote superior standards in event organisation, safety and runner experience and a financial commitment to anti-doping.

There are 4 Label categories in 2024 viz: World Athletics Label, World Athletics Elite Label, World Athletics Gold Label and World Athletics Platinum Label.

Okpekpe road race attained its gold label status in 2023. It is the first World Athletics gold label 10km road race in Nigeria.

This is the only World Athletics label road race, irrespective of the category that will be held on Saturday May 25, 2024.
