As part of efforts to encourage young athletes who are presently taking part in the National Youth Games holding in Asaba, Delta state, the office of the Nigeria Pillar of Sports, Chief Donatus Agu Ejidike, has approved the sum of one hundred thousand Naira (N100,000) as cash donations to each of the first Gold medalists at the Games.
The category of the sporting events include Weightlifting, Karate and the youngest Gold medalist of the 2023 NYG.
Already, the National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Issiah Benjamin, has mandated the Vice President, SWAN (South East), Frankie Omokhua and his South South counterpart, Azuka Chiemaka, to carry out the selection of the successful athletes for recognition.
The names of the successful athletes will be announced at the SWAN Convention set to hold on Friday, September 29, 2023, at the Cyson Hotel in Asaba.
The National Youth Games which enters Day 5 this Thursday, has witnessed excellent displays by young athletes while participating states are battling to become the new champion of the 7th edition of the competition.
Meanwhile, host Delta state is leading the Medals Table with 21 Gold, 14 Silver, 9 Bronze, Lagos is in second spot with 12 Gold, 9 Silver, 8 Bronze, Bayelsa remains in third position after winning 9 Gold, 2 Silver, 6 Bronze, Edo state is fourth with 6 Gold, 3 Silver, 7 Bronze and Kwara state completes the top five with 3 Gold, 6 Silver, 4 Bronze medals.
