The Nigeria Fencing Federation has unveiled a 12-member team to represent the country at the highly anticipated 23rd African Fencing Championships. The tournament is scheduled to take place at Charterhouse Lagos from June 25 to 29, 2025. This prestigious event will bring together top fencers from across Africa, and Team Nigeria is eager to make its mark.
The Squad
The Nigerian team boasts a mix of talented young fencers and experienced athletes. The men’s squad is led by team captain Inkosi Brou, a US-based fencer who made history as the first Nigerian to win a medal at an international event. Other notable team members include UK-based fencer Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye and Wisdom Okanlawon. The women’s squad features talented fencers like Peluola Akinbamiro, Somto Eribenne, and Sara Idongesit.
Tournament Details
The 23rd African Fencing Championships will feature 12 events, including six individual and six team events in foil, epee, and sabre. Team Nigeria will face stiff competition from top fencers from countries like Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, and South Africa.
Coach’s Confidence
National coach Ibrahim Alogba expressed confidence in the team’s potential, despite their relative youth and inexperience. “Our team is the youngest in terms of age and experience, which reduces the pressure on them. This could work in our favor. We may be young, but we are not intimidated by records or reputations. We are ready to break Nigeria’s medal drought in this tournament,” he said.
Italian Coach’s Guidance
Italian coach Riccardo Bardin, who has been training the team, praised the athletes’ potential but urged patience as they continue to develop. With his expertise and guidance, the team is poised to make significant strides in the tournament.
A Historic Hosting Opportunity
This marks only the third time the continental tournament will be hosted in Sub-Saharan Africa, following previous editions in Senegal (2002) and Mali (2009 and 2019). The hosting opportunity provides a unique chance for Nigerian fencers to shine on home soil and inspire the next generation of athletes.
With a talented squad and experienced coaching, Team Nigeria is ready to take on the best of Africa and make a lasting impression at the 23rd African Fencing Championships.
