    Nigerian Football Family Mourns: Peter Rufai, Legendary Goalkeeper, Dies At 61

    Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai has passed away at the age of 61. He died on Thursday, July 3, 2025, after a prolonged illness that had kept him out of the public eye.

    Rufai had an illustrious career, earning 65 caps for the national team and featuring in two FIFA World Cup tournaments, as well as the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph.

    Some of his notable achievements include:

    – International Career: 65 appearances for the Super Eagles
    – Major Tournaments: Participated in two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998) and won the 1994 AFCON

    -Legacy : Regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, known for his exceptional skills and contributions to Nigerian football

    While his family has yet to make an official announcement, a senior Lagos State Government official has confirmed his passing. Tributes are pouring in from former teammates, football officials, and fans, mourning the loss of a legendary figure in Nigerian football
