President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, has praised the Federation’s board, key stakeholders, and players for their collective commitment and professionalism during Nigeria’s Davis Cup World Group II Playoff tie against Uzbekistan, describing the outing as a clear sign of progress in Nigerian tennis.Speaking after the opening matches at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Ochei said the Davis Cup return to Nigeria after 19 years reflects deliberate planning, improved governance, and growing confidence in the country’s tennis structure.

The NTF President acknowledged the support of the National Sports Commission, led by Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, as well as sponsors and partners whose backing made the successful hosting of the Davis Cup possible.
Ochei concluded by reaffirming the Federation’s long-term vision, noting that the Davis Cup experience will serve as a springboard for grassroots development, youth engagement, and the steady rebuilding of Nigeria’s presence on the global tennis stage.

“This Davis Cup tie goes beyond results,” Ochei said. “It reflects the hard work of our board, the dedication of our stakeholders, and the belief that Nigerian tennis can be properly organized, well-supported, and globally competitive.”

He commended the players for their discipline and resilience against a strong Uzbekistan side, noting that their performances demonstrated how narrow the gap has become between Nigeria and more established tennis nations.

“Our players competed with courage and composure,” he added. “They showed that Nigerian tennis players can stand toe-to-toe with highly ranked opponents when given the right environment and support.”
Ochei also highlighted improved player welfare as a major priority of the current administration, stressing that athletes were provided with proper preparation, logistics, and support throughout the competition.

“We made player welfare non-negotiable,” he said. “From preparation to competition day, the focus was on creating the right conditions for our athletes to perform at their best. That is the standard we are committed to maintaining.”
