Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa has described the Niger Delta Games as a powerful platform for discovering and nurturing talents, as well as fostering friendship among the nine participating states.

He also noted that sport has consistently proven to be a unifying force across ethnic, cultural, and political boundaries.

Aiyedatiwa, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Segun Omoyofunmi made the remarks while receiving the Niger Delta Games Torch of Unity in Akure, the state capital.

According to him, “As the torch begins its journey from Ondo State and beyond, it carries with it the message that the Niger Delta is ready to showcase its talents, ready to compete with honour and ready to inspire.

“It also reminds our youths that sports is not only about winning medals and trophies, but about discipline, purpose, and a pathway to greatness.”

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s support for the 2026 Niger Delta Games.

“We are committed to providing an enabling environment for our athletes to train, excel, and proudly represent us in Benin.

“I urge our athletes to embrace the spirit of fair play, teamwork, and perseverance as they prepare for this prestigious event.

“I commend the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in conjunction with Dunamis Icon Limited, the Games rights owners, and all other stakeholders whose dedication has made the event possible.”

The representative of the Dunamis Icon Project and member of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), Frank Ilaboya, commended the Ondo State liaison committee for its role in the movement of the Torch of Unity.

Ilaboya emphasised that the purpose of the Niger Delta Games is to discover talent at the grassroots level.

He said that outstanding athletes from the competition will be empowered through enhanced training opportunities. The future is very bright for any exceptional athlete at the Niger Delta Games.”

A total of 270 athletes and 46 coaches will represent Ondo State at the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, scheduled to be held in Edo State from 20 to 27 of this month.
