The 2nd edition of the Niger Delta Games (Edo 2026) officially opened on Feb 20, 2026 at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City with colourful ceremonies, cultural displays, music and fanfare. Athletes from all nine Niger Delta states present.

Over 3,000 athletes and officials from these states are competing: Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers.

Edo State, as host, entered a full contingent of 282 athletes ready to compete across many disciplines.
⚽ Highlights from Competition Action
In the women’s football event, Team Edo delivered a spectacular 6-0 win over Akwa Ibom in their opener, asserting strong medal ambitions.

In men’s football, Bayelsa and Imo played to a 2-2 draw, while Team Delta also fought back to draw with defending champions Bayelsa.

The Federal Government  and the Niger Delta Development Commission says the Games are more than a competition; they’re talent discovery platforms that promote unity, youth development and discipline.

Bayelsa Gov. Douye Diri urged Team Bayelsa to defend their title from the maiden edition.

Organisers emphasize fair play and grassroots integrity — with rules against ‘poaching’ athletes from non-indigenous communities and an age cap to keep the competition grassroots-focused.
