The organizers of the prestigious Okpekpe International 10km Road Race have announced a one‑week shift in the date of the event, moving it from May 23 to May 30, 2026.

According to Pamodzi Sports Marketing, organizers of the historic World Athletics Gold Label race, the adjustment was made to ensure an even more successful outing this year.

The new date allows for the completion of enhanced logistical arrangements, including expanded medical coverage, improved security deployment, and additional spectator facilities.

Race Director Zack Amodu explained that the change is a proactive step to guarantee the comfort and safety of both athletes and fans.

‘We are committed to delivering a world‑class race experience. By moving the event forward by one week, we can finalize the upgraded support systems we’ve been working on, ensuring participants enjoy the best possible conditions,’ he said.

Amodu also revealed that the race’s medical director has just completed his World Athletics certification in Madrid, in line with the new directive from World Athletics.

This achievement makes the Okpekpe race the first in Nigeria to have a World Athletics‑certified medical director, further raising the standard of the competition.

The Okpekpe Road Race, recognized by World Athletics as a Gold Label event, has grown into one of Africa’s most celebrated road races, attracting elite runners from across the globe.

It was the first road race in Nigeria and West Africa to be granted a Label status, and the first to have its course measured by a World Athletics‑certified measurer.

Organizers emphasized that the postponement is not due to any setback, but rather a positive measure to elevate the race’s quality and prestige.
