Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, has expressed his satisfaction with the numerous A-list boxing shows scheduled for this festive season. He emphasized that for many Nigerian fighters, boxing is more than just a sport; it serves as a pathway for social mobility and a means to gain global recognition.

Speaking to reporters in Lagos, Dr. Ladipo emphasized that in neighborhoods where economic challenges persist, boxing’s discipline and resolve provide a lifeline. “Boxing gyms in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt continue to develop future fighters with dreams of world fame, thanks to the NBBofC’s efforts to popularize professional boxing throughout Nigeria.”

Reacting to the four national titles sanctioned by the body for contest this December over a three-day period, he added, “These title fights cap off an eventful year for Nigerian boxing. We are thrilled to sanction these bouts and eager to watch our fighters demonstrate their abilities for the delights of the boxing enthusiasts.”

He added that despite the challenges, Nigeria boasts a pool of raw boxing talent. Grassroots initiatives and amateur competitions continue to unearth promising fighters. With better investment in training programmes, Nigeria can develop world-class champions in the coming years.

“Private groups are becoming more interested in investing in Nigerian boxing. For example, sports entrepreneur Dr. Ezekiel Adamu is motivating young Nigerians and promoting a new era of boxing through his platform, GameRush. Better training facilities, larger tournaments, and financial security for our boxers are all possible outcomes of increased corporate sponsorship,” he noted.

Dr. Ladipo added that “this shift in focus could lead to a resurgence of boxing talent, allowing fighters to gain international recognition. As enthusiasm grows, the hope is that Nigeria will soon become a powerhouse in the boxing world, producing champions who can compete on the global stage.”
