The National Sports Commission (NSC) has done another round of inspection of sporting facilities in Enugu State as preparations continue for the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival, holding in 2026.

The inspection team, led by Mrs. Thecla Opara, Secretary of the Main Organising Committee (MOC) and Director of the National Sports Festival at the NSC, was received by Mr. Olumide Bamiduro, Secretary of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), and other top officials in Enugu.

After the inspection, Mrs Opara said the visit was part of the Commission’s efforts to ensure all facilities meet the required standards for hosting a world-class sporting event.

Speaking after the exercise, Mrs Opara explained that the visit was part of the Commission’s continuous efforts to ensure that all facilities meet the standards required for hosting a world-class sporting event.

“Our mission here was to assess the level of readiness of facilities ahead of the 2026 National Sports Festival. We are impressed with what we have seen, several facilities are already in good condition, while others are progressing rapidly. The level of work and commitment displayed so far is commendable. We are confident that by our next visit in a few months, the progress will be even more remarkable,” she said.

She further commended the Enugu State Government for its dedication, noting that with the support of Governor Peter Mbah and the NSC, Enugu is on course to deliver an exceptional festival. “

state government’s commitment and the energy we have seen from the LOC are very encouraging. With this momentum, Enugu will be ready to host one of the best National Sports Festivals in history,” Madam Opara added.

In his remarks, Mr. Bamiduro expressed the appreciation of the Enugu State Government and the LOC to the NSC for entrusting the state with the hosting rights of what he described as “a festival of experience.”

He assured that every effort is being made to meet deadlines and deliver on the state’s promise of a successful event.

“We thank the NSC for giving Enugu State the privilege to host the 23rd National Sports Festival. This is more than a sporting event for us; it is an opportunity to showcase Enugu’s capacity, culture, and hospitality. Renovation and construction works are ongoing across venues, and we are fully committed to providing world-class facilities for every sport,” he said.

He added that Enugu’s rich cultural heritage, tourism potential, and sports-loving spirit will make the festival an unforgettable experience for all participants and visitors.

“Enugu is a State with history, hospitality, and passion. The festival will not only display sporting excellence but also celebrate the cultural pride of the state. Everyone who comes here will experience something truly unique,” Mr. Bamiduro concluded.

During the visit, the inspection team toured major venues earmarked for different sporting events across the state, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium complex, Enugu Sports Club, Enugu Golf Course, College of the Immaculate Conception, Enugu Sports Council, Post Primary Board Hall, The Base, St. Patrick’s Emene, the International Conference Centre, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus, Nike Lake, and designated roads for cycling.
