The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has a new leadership at the helm of its Cooperative Multipurpose Society, following an election held during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Union’s Osho-Drive Secretariat on February 13, 2026.
Outgoing President Comrade Ayokunle Ajayi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, reflecting on his tenure in a valedictory speech.
Comrade Ayokunle, who is currently a Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) Organizing & Operations of the Union was full of praise for the leadership of the Union, having given him the opportunity to serve in that capacity, saying that it was no mean trust by putting the people’s funds into his care with the rest of his outgoing executives for the years they meritoriously served the Cooperative Society with due diligence.
Comrade Ayokunle also spoke of his executives passionately, describing them as dedicated, committed, and most responsible to the course of duty always. He, however, described his team as most prudent to the best of his knowledge, who worked with sincerity of purpose, with the genuine interest of members at heart.
The Osun State born technocrat Comrade also said of his colleagues resilience, cooperation, and steadfastness as achievers of the progress being celebrated so far; recalling that when they assumed office, they had no structure on ground, no foundation and with little technical know- how; and in truth, they were actually building from nothing, but today the difference achieved so far can be measured with success being celebrated today, going back memory lane in 2019 when he was first appointed the President of the Maritme Workers’ (Apapa) Cooperative Multipurpose Society Limited.
Comrade Ayokunle also said that the core function of the Union’ Cooperative has been the provision of loans to members with modest interest to support welfare and financial stability; given the limited manpower and limited operational capacity, while reminding members that their funds are always safe and intact, duly audited and submitted to the Lagos State Government as required by law.
The DSG Organizing & Operation also thanked the Apapa Cooperative Area Officer and her entire team for their effective coordination, guidance, and regulatory oversight. He praised the entire team for their effectiveness, professionalism and their unwavering support at all times which has never been taken for granted.
The outgoing President was full of praise for the President-General of the Union, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi for his progressive work so far, especially in the prompt remittance of members’ cooperative deductions, stressing that such prompt financial obligations, and financial stability reensures members’ confidence on the society.
He also thanked the immediate past President-General of the Union, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju for his visionary initiative for establishing the Cooperative Multipurpose Society for the Union; while praising the indelible initiative of the former PG Emeritus, Comrade Adeyanju, who is so committed to members welfare at all times.
While thanking everyone that graced the AGM the outgoing President Emeritus of the Cooperative, Comrade Ayo announced the newly elected Executives of the Cooperative as follows:-
