The 2024 MTN Athletic Championship, also known as “MTN
Champs Season 2,” will bring together thousands of athletes and
sports administrators from across
the country in Ibadan, Oyo State.
MTN Champs, an initiative of
MTN Nigeria, is a platform that
fosters the competitive spirit of
young athletes in four age categories: Cadet (U14), Youth (U17),
Junior (U20), and the newly introduced senior (no age limit).
The championship features a
variety of track and field events,
allowing athletes to showcase
their abilities in sprints, hurdles,
middle-distance races, jumps, and
throws.
MTN Champs is set to continue its second season in Ibadan
after a successful start in Asaba.
This event, which will take place
from Friday, April 5th to Monday,
April 8th, 2024, is expected to be a
watershed moment in the nation’s
athletic calendar.
The four-day competition began yesterday, Friday, and will end
on Monday next week.
Furthermore, the event, which
began in 2023 in Asaba, Delta state,
is expected to include track and
field sporting activities.
Speaking at a press conference
to announce the historic event,
Mr Bambo Akanni, Founder of
Making of Champions, stated that
this year’s event will be remarkable because approximately 2600
athletes will compete in track and
field activities.
He added that the MTN
Champ Season 1 was held in Asaba last year, with approximately
2000 athletes participating.
According to him, “MTN
CHAMPS is a programme in Nigeria that seeks to identify and
develop athletic talent across the
country. It is on track to become
the primary platform for identifying and developing promising athletes who will go on to represent
Nigeria in prestigious international competitions such as the Olympics and World Championships.
“With a focus on discovering
and developing athletic talent,
MTN CHAMPS has the potential
to transform Nigeria’s sporting
landscape.”
“This event will provide talented individuals from all over
the country with the opportunity
to showcase their skills while also
receiving the training and support
they require to reach their full potential as world-class athletes.
