Two British nationals are missing in Sweden, the Foreign Office said.

It comes as police launched a double-murder investigation after two bodies were found in a burnt-out car in Malmo on Sunday afternoon.

Swedish media have said that both victims were British nationals and at least one was shot dead before the fire.

Responding to reports of a fire, emergency services only discovered the bodies as they were putting the blaze out, local media reported.

Emergency workers on the site were said to have noticed what could have been a bullet hole in one of the victims, they added.

According to reports, the Britons had rented the Toyota Rav 4 at Copenhagen Airport, Denmark, before it was found a burnt-out shell around 2pm local time in Malmo.

A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the families of two British men reported missing in Sweden and are in touch with the local authorities.”

Local police are interviewing witnesses and appealing to the public for any help, while Interpol is also reportedly said to be involved.

According to the Swedish Police Authority, “the two people who were found dead in a burnt-out car Sunday afternoon have not yet been identified.

“The bodies are being examined by forensic medicine.

“The incident is currently being investigated as a murder.

“Several witnesses have been interviewed and the police are interested in further observations and tips,” the police added.
