Manchester City Edge Struggling Southampton To Secure Top Spot
Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League when Erling Haaland’s early effort was enough to defeat struggling Southampton. When Haaland shrugged off Jan Bednarek to head Matheus Nunes’ fifth-minute cross past Saints goalie Aaron Ramsdale for his 11th league goal of the season, the visitors appeared to be heading for a crushing defeat. However, a combination of their own tenacious defending and some poor finishing by City, with Haaland the main culprit, ensured a few home nerves before the final whistle. The triumph extended City’s Premier League unbeaten streak to 32 games. They are now only six weeks away from completing a complete year since their last defeat on December 6th against Aston Villa.
Although they deserve respect for their efforts, the outcome did nothing to aid Southampton’s plight at the bottom of the league.
Nearly a quarter of the way through the season, Russell Martin’s team still has just one point.
They can take comfort in the fact that the only other time they failed to win any of their first nine games, in 1998-99, they stayed up, but Martin must hope Southampton’s owners show him some patience as he attempts to reverse the club’s fortunes following their return to the top level.
Haaland’s performance was underwhelming although City won the lead.
Pep Guardiola at ease to see the battle between Arsenal and Liverpool from a comfortable point of view.
