Liverpool secured a 2‑1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, 20 December 2025. Despite finishing the match with nine men, Spurs out‑shot Liverpool (15 to 8) and posted a higher expected‑goals (xG) rating (1.01 vs 0.6), but defensive lapses and red cards proved decisive.
The turning point came in the 33rd minute when Xavi Simons was sent off for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk, leaving Tottenham with ten players. Earlier, Florian Wirtz’s free‑kick forced a save from Vicario, and Liverpool’s pressure kept the home side on the back foot throughout the opening 45 minutes.
After the break, substitute Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the 56th minute, tapping in a Wirtz‑assisted chance. Isak was forced off shortly after with an injury, becoming the second Liverpool player ever to be subbed on, score, and be subbed off in a Premier League match. *Hugo Ekitike* doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 66th minute with a headed finish. Tottenham pulled one back in the 83rd minute through *Richarlison*, but the comeback was halted when *Cristian Romero* received a second yellow‑card in stoppage time, leaving Spurs with nine players.
The win lifted Liverpool to fifth place in the early‑season Premier League table. Tottenham’s loss extended their home‑league defeat streak to 11 matches in 2025 – a club record. Liverpool’s summer signings, especially Wirtz and Ekitike, made decisive contributions, while Spurs’ disciplinary issues proved costly.
