Lagos State has taken a significant step towards tackling malnutrition with the launch of fortified Eko Rice, a locally produced rice variety enriched with essential micronutrients.
This initiative is part of the state’s efforts to address food insecurity and promote healthy eating habits among its residents.
The Eko Rice project is a joint venture between the Lagos State Government and private sector partners, aiming to increase access to nutritious food while supporting local farmers.
The rice is produced at the Imota Rice Mill, which has a capacity of 32 metric tonnes per hour. Eko Rice is laboratory-tested to have less than 2% impurity and 14% moisture content, ensuring high-quality standards .
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu launched the N5 billion Eko Rice Forward Contract Programme, which will provide a platform for farmers, processors, and traders to buy and sell rice contracts at fair prices.
This initiative is expected to boost local rice production, reduce import dependence, and create jobs.
The Lagos State Government has also launched various initiatives to support farmers, including a ₦500 million subsidy program and the “Produce for Lagos” initiative, with a ₦500 billion investment.
These efforts aim to enhance food security, promote sustainable agriculture, and improve the overall well-being of Lagosians .
The introduction of fortified Eko Rice is a significant milestone in Lagos’ fight against malnutrition, and it’s expected to have a positive impact on the health and productivity of its residents.
