Fighting in Israel is outraging a day after Hamas fighters breached the border from Gaza in a surprise attack. Rescuers expect the death toll in Israel to be more than 500, and at least 2,000 people are wounded, according to officials.
Israel has been pounding Gaza with airstrikes and formally declared war on Hamas on Sunday, setting the stage for a massive military response. At least 370 Palestinians have died, according to the health ministry in Gaza.
Hamas has captured dozens of Israelis, including soldiers. Israeli forces are trying to drive the militant group out of southern Israel.
The full scale of the Israeli response remains unclear, but a military spokesperson hinted the country may try to take full control of Gaza for the first time since 2005.
