Manchester City captain İlkay Gündoğan will first and foremost be looking to round off a memorable campaign by lifting the Champions League trophy on Saturday night. Having already lifted the Premier League title and scored a double in the FA Cup final win against Manchester United, the German international is on course to lead a historic treble.
After this weekend, though, attention quickly turn to his future, with his current deal expiring at the end of the month. According to L’Équipe, Gündoğan is one of Paris Saint-Germain’s midfield targets for the summer. The Ligue 1 champions are particularly interested in bringing in a goal-scoring midfielder – their current options have not been prolific in that regard – who can also provide a more seamless transition between defence and attack.
The fact that the 32-year-old would be arriving on a free is also key for PSG given that the club are looking to limit their outlay this summer (and are already signing Manuel Ugarte for €60m). However, his signing would also contract the aim of rejuvenating the squad and signing French players.
PSG face competition from Arsenal and Barcelona for Gündoğan, and have been told that the Catalans are his favoured option. However, Julian Nagelsmann’s potential arrival as Christophe Galtier’s successor could see the former Bayern Munich manager place his compatriot higher up on the transfert shortlist, and convince the midfielder to change his position. For now, though, all eyes are on Istanbul.
