Victor Ikpeba, the former Nigerian football sensation and African Footballer of the Year, took center stage at the Niger Delta Games Edo 2026 opening ceremony, igniting the flame that sets the tone for a spectacular event.
The atmosphere was electric as Ikpeba, a proud son of the Niger Delta, proudly lit the flame, symbolizing the start of a grand celebration of sports, culture, and unity.
The event, themed “Beyond Oil: Harnessing Talents,” aims to showcase the region’s rich cultural heritage and untapped potential, while promoting peace, unity, and development.
Ikpeba’s involvement added a touch of glamour, inspiring young athletes to strive for greatness.
As the flame burned bright, the crowd erupted in cheers, and the games were officially underway.
For 10 days, athletes from across the Niger Delta will compete in various sports, including football, basketball, athletics, and more.
The games will also feature cultural performances, exhibitions, and workshops, highlighting the region’s vibrant traditions.

“This is more than just a games; it’s a movement to unlock the potential of our people and showcase the best of the Niger Delta to the world,” he said.
The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, welcomed athletes, officials, and visitors, promising a memorable experience.
“Edo 2026 is a platform to demonstrate our commitment to sports development, cultural preservation, and economic growth. Let’s make it a success!”
The Niger Delta Games is a collaborative effort between Dunamis Icon Limited, led by Hon Itiako Ikpokpo, and NDDC, along side other sponsors.
As the games unfold, the eyes of the nation will be on Edo State, eager to witness history in the making.
With Ikpeba’s flame burning bright, the spirit of the Niger Delta Games lives on.
