Gunners Reclaim Glory with Gritty Win Over Brighton

Arsenal returned to the summit of the Premier League table with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Emirates Stadium, responding immediately after Manchester City had briefly moved top earlier on Saturday. An early strike from Martin Ødegaard set the tone as Mikel Arteta’s side re-established a two-point cushion in the title race.

The Gunners began with authority and were rewarded in the 14th minute when Bukayo Saka capitalised on a loose ball and teed up Ødegaard, who rifled a powerful long-range effort into the bottom-right corner. Arsenal pressed for a second before the interval, with Bart Verbruggen producing a sharp save to deny Martin Zubimendi and former Brighton forward Leandro Trossard firing over from close range.

Arsenal eventually doubled their advantage early in the second half in unfortunate circumstances for Brighton. Georginio Rutter, attempting to clear Declan Rice’s dangerous corner, rose highest only to glance the ball into his own net, seemingly putting the hosts in firm control.

Brighton, however, refused to fold and halved the deficit just after the hour mark. Yasin Ayari’s low drive struck the post, and Diego Gómez reacted quickest to smash home the rebound, injecting tension into the contest. David Raya was then forced into an outstanding stretching save to deny Yankuba Minteh, while Gabriel Martinelli missed a late opportunity to seal the game at the other end.

Despite being forced into a defensive reshuffle — including losing Riccardo Calafiori in the warm-up and deploying Rice at right-back — Arsenal showed resilience to claim a sixth consecutive Premier League home win, their longest such run since 2022. The hosts generated 2.8 expected goals from 24 shots, with Saka particularly influential, as Arteta’s side demonstrated both depth and determination in maintaining their grip on first place.
