Akwa ibom representative, Gabriel Okon has emerged winner in the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) South-South Zonal Election held on Monday in Benin city, the Edo state capital, securing four votes to pick the zone’s position ahead of the second place Itiako Ikpokpo of Delta state who scored two votes.
The zonal election was conducted by delegates representing the six states from the south south regoin of Nigeria—Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers with Sir Braveman Wordi, the designated electoral official.
key stakeholders Present at the election include the Zonal Secretary of the National Sports Commission( NSC) South-South, Mr. Peter Njoku.
The zonal National Sports Commission sribe , Njoku expressed his satisfaction with the conduct of the election, describing it as free and fair just as He commended the electoral officials for putting all necessary measures in place to ensure a smooth and transparent process.
Njoku urged the contestants to work together in unity, regardless of the outcome, for the progress of athletics in the South-South.
The electoral official, Braveman Wordi, appreciated the contestants for their understanding and the display of sportsmanship throughout the process.
He thanked them for their continued support for athletics development in the region and encouraged them to remain committed to the growth of the sport.
In his post-election remarks, Okon expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to work with the other contestants and all stakeholders to advance athletics development across the region.
“I am committed to promoting unity and ensuring that the South-South continues to produce top-tier athletes.
This victory is not mine alone it is a collective step forward for sports in our region,” Okon stated.
