The Oyo State branch of NBBofC has been commended by Remi Aboderin, the President of the West African Boxing Union (WABU) and Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, for achieving the historic milestone of producing the first set of professional boxing referees and judges following a successful 3-day training/seminar at Ibadan’s Obafemi Awolowo Stadium over the weekend.

While speaking to journalists in Ibadan, Aboderin stated that Oyo State has once again demonstrated its role as a pacesetter by their actions, which serve as a new benchmark for the entire nation through the Oyo State Chapter of the Nigerian Boxing Board, overseen by Hon. Gbenga Opaleye.

“Our purpose for coming was to train those who aspired to be boxing referees and judges in the skills necessary for officiating and regulating a boxing bout. After the three-day seminar, those who were successful had the NBBofC badge conferred upon them by Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, President of the NBBofC, who oversaw the entire process.”

“To speak frankly, one starts a journey of a thousand miles with a step. The things we have observed here are rather encouraging; essentially, we are pleased with the turnout of these interested officials up to this point. The figures we observed here as participants are promising.

Aboderin further elaborated on the factors contributing to the recent growth of professional boxing in Nigeria, noting that the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control is working to attract promoters and inform them of boxing’s profitability.

He observed, “As a boxing promoter in Nigeria, your primary task is to secure the management of skilled boxers with impressive records. Before long, international opportunities will arise for these boxers to travel and make a decent living by utilizing their natural abilities to support their families.”

Aboderin added that “This emphasis on showcasing talent and creating pathways for boxers is crucial in elevating the sport’s profile in the country. By fostering a supportive environment, promoters can help unlock the potential of boxers and contribute to the growth of boxing in Nigeria.”
