Nigeria Customs Ladies were again at the receiving end, when losing 57-96 dunks to hosts of the inaugural edition of the FIBA Africa Women’s Basketball League, Sporting Alexandria, of Egypt.
Having won their first Group A fixture against Université de Douala of Cameroun on Monday, before being trounced by Kenya Ports Authority Ladies on Wednesday; the loss to Sporting Alexandria 24 hours later, was no surprise to many.
The Customs Ladies urged on by captain Nkem Akawaiwe trailed 32-43 at halftime; and Sporting who slightly upped the ante after the break, won the third quarter 22-14 and the fourth period 31-11, to complete the crushing victory.
The defeat handed Nigeria Customs, their second loss and a win, in three games played at the tournament; but they still have a final pool A game to play on Friday, against CNSS of the DR Congo, before regressing to the classification games.
The other team from FIBA Africa Zone 3 at the tournament, ASPAC Cotonou of Benin Republic have fared even worse; and their 65-95 defeat against Rwanda Energy Group BBC Women was their third loss in as many games.
In Thursday’s other games decided, Université de Douala were beaten 74-59 by Kenya Ports Authority Ladies who won the first three quarters, 16-10, 19-11, 22-17; before losing the last 17-18.
The second side from Cameroun in Alexandria, Overdose Up Station also fell 43-76 to Inter Clube of Angola.
After a closely fought opening quarter, which the Camerounians lost 16-17; they also lost two more quarters, 4-28 and 10-18; but managed to hold their own 13-13 in third quarter.
