Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Nigeria’s national record-holder in the men’s Shot Put, has successfully cruised into the finals at the ongoing 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan. He achieved this feat with a solid performance in the qualification round, recording a best throw of 20.83 meters, which placed him 5th in Group A and 7th overall.
USA born Enekwechi’s throws included 20.83m in his first attempt, 20.71m in his second, and another 20.83m in his third, showcasing his consistency and skill.
He finished 7th overall in the qualification round, securing his spot among the top 12 athletes who advanced to the final.
Enekwechi holds the Nigerian and African record in Shot Put with a throw of 22.10m, set on July 5, 2025 .
Enekwechi may face stiff competition in the finals from top athletes such as:
Tom Walsh (New Zealand) with a throw of 21.74m
Adrian Piperi (USA) with a throw of 21.47m
Ryan Crouser (USA) with a throw of 21.37m.
With Enekwechi’s qualification, Nigeria’s hopes for a medal in the throwing events now rest on his shoulders. He will aim to improve on his qualification mark and push for a podium finish in the men’s Shot Put final .
