Ekong Urges CAF To Scrap Away Goal Rule, Playoffs

William Troost-Ekong, the Super Eagles defence strongman, has urged the African Soccer ruling body to follow other continental football bodies by scrapping the away goal rule and playoffs.

The Nigerian team missed out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar due to away rule and playoffs against Ghana.

While speaking to the Brila radio, the Watford FC defender made it clear that Africa is the only country where such rules are applicable.

” Away goal rule is one I would like CAF to change because it is very difficult to take.

I think we are the only continent that decided on the World Cup spot like that, but hopefully for the next World Cup that will be better.

Morocco did well to open some space for us as we did in 2018, if you are the group winner, you be qualifying for a tournament and it shouldn’t come down to playoff and away goal rule”, he said.
