Edo Set to Host Thrilling 2nd Niger Delta Games: A Celebration of Sports and Unity

Edo State emerged victorious, securing the hosting rights to the 2nd Niger Delta Games, with Governor Monday Okpebholo at the helm.The event, scheduled to take place in February 2026, promises to be a spectacular celebration of sports, culture, and regional unity, bringing together athletes from across the nine Niger Delta states.

The announcement was made at a grand ceremony attended by dignitaries, including Dr. Samuel  Ogbuku, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC); Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, his deputy, , Rt. Hon Dennis Idahosa; Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Enabulele; and MD/CEO of Dunamis Icon Limited ,Sir Itiako Ikpokpo.Dr. Ogbuku explained that Edo State was chosen for its excellent infrastructural facilities and strong commitment to sports development, making it an ideal location for hosting a prestigious event of this magnitude.

Governor Okpebholo expressed his administration’s delight in hosting the games, promising a world-class event that would showcase the state’s rich culture and athletic talent.

“We have the strength, infrastructure, athletes, and everything it takes to win,” Governor Okpebholo said, mandating the Sports Commission Chairman, Amadin Desmond Enabulele, to work closely with organisers and sponsors to ensure a memorable festival.

The Niger Delta Games aim to strengthen regional ties and drive national development through sports, the commission looks “Beyond Oil: Harnessing Talents” targeting the youth and promoting regional collaboration and integration.

Thousands of athletes from Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Imo, Abia and Ondo state. will converge in Edo State to compete in various sporting disciplines.With the festival baton passed to Edo State, the government is working closely with NDDC and Dunamis to deliver a world-standard event. “We are ready to put on a spectacular show, and our athletes will give it their all to bring glory to Edo State and the Niger Delta region,” Governor Okpebholo said.

Alabo Boma Iyayi, a renowned sports enthusiast, praised the choice of Edo State as the host. “Edo State has the facilities, the passion, and the talent. The 2nd Niger Delta Games will be a huge success,” he said.
