Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, began their WNBA Tour with a 63–89 defeat to the the Los Angeles Sparks in a spirited preseason clash in the United States. In what marked a historic outing—making Nigeria the first nation to face a WNBA franchise—the encounter formed a crucial part of D’Tigress’ preparations for the forthcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. While the Sparks eventually secured a 26-point victory, the Nigerian side delivered a resilient and commendable performance against top-tier opposition.

D’Tigress showed flashes of quality throughout the contest, competing with intensity and discipline, particularly in phases where they matched the physicality and pace of their American counterparts. Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah led the scoring for Nigeria with 11 points, while Ucho Izoje contributed 10 points. Veteran guards Promise Amukamara and Ezinne Kalu added 8 points apiece, underscoring a balanced offensive effort.

Despite the defeat, the outing provided invaluable experience for the Nigerian team. Facing a seasoned WNBA side offered a high level of competition that exposed key areas for improvement while also highlighting the team’s growing cohesion and potential.

Coaches and observers alike will take encouragement from the team’s work rate, defensive stretches, and ability to create scoring opportunities against elite opposition. Such international friendlies are widely regarded as essential building blocks, offering lessons that will strengthen the squad ahead of global competition.

D’Tigress will now turn their attention to their next test against the Minnesota Lynx on April 28, as they continue their preparations with optimism and a clear focus on growth.

While the scoreboard favored the hosts, the broader narrative remains one of progress, exposure, and promise for a Nigerian side steadily building toward the world stage.
