Over 70 schools battled for honours at the first leg of Season 2 of MTN CHAMPS, which took place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba from 17th to 21st February.
At the end of proceedings, Government Model topped the standings in the Cadet (U-14) Boys’ category with 85 points, finishing far ahead of Model Technical (35 points) and Zappa Basic (30 points).
Best Okpor proved to be an asset to Government Model as he claimed GOLD medals in the Cadet Boys’ 200m, 400m and 4x100m, as well as a Silver in the Long Jump, taking his tally of laurels to four.
Delta Secondary School won the Cadet Girls’ trophy after amassing 101 points, with Ryders Academy trailing in second with 31 points as Okpanam High settled for Bronze with 16 points, same number of points polled by Osadenis Mixed Secondary School, Asaba.
Ella Udumubrai made the difference for Delta Secondary School in the Cadet Girls’ Long Jump where she inspired a 1-2 for her team, as well as her 100m Silver and 400m Bronze. Her team also stuck GOLD in the 4x100m relay.
Just like they did in the Cadet Boys’ category, Government Model dominated the Youth (U-17) Boys’ class with 60 points, narrowly beating Delta Secondary by two points to take their second trophy at MTN CHAMPS Asaba.
Jacob Olumor was one of the standout athletes for Government Model with his 100m GOLD as teammate Progress Idoghor settled for Bronze. The team also stormed to GOLD in the 4x100m relay.
Zappa Basic took the Youth Girls’ trophy with 79 points as Delta Secondary and Rosa Mystical followed with 51 and 43 points respectively.
Susan Christopher was outstanding in the Shot put where she claimed the top prize, alongside a Silver medal in the Discus. Ajike Ikola Lawal followed suit by winning GOLD in the Long Jump whilst Jessica Nwanne won Silver in the High Jump, amongst other laurels won by Zappa Basic in the Youth Girls’ category, including GOLD in the 4x100m relay.
Unique Athletics won the Junior (Mixed) Title with 46 points, with Delta State amassing 42 points for 2nd while Bayelsa State finished 3rd with 37 points.
Oluwabunmi Israel and Hashiat Omowunmi were some of the standout performers for Unique Athletics with GOLD medals in the women’s 200m and 800m respectively, with Omowunmi also winning Bronze in the 400m Hurdles.
MTN CHAMPS moves to Kaduna for the second leg (5th to 8th March) while Ibadan (26th to 29th March) and Port Harcourt (23rd to 26th April) host the last two legs of Season 2.
